Ann McGowan Davis - 91, of Valdosta passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at Langdale Hospice House. Born on October 3rd, 1927 in Quitman GA to Norman & Mary Lewis McGowan, she was the third of four children and was raised in the McGowan Funeral Home. She was named Miss VHS 1943 and graduated from Valdosta High School in 1944. She also attended Georgia State Women's College, which is presently Valdosta State University. She married Richard H. (Dick) Davis in 1945, and they became charter members of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years, was a longstanding member of the United Methodist Women, and loved singing with the Keenagers Khorus at nursing homes. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Elks Auxiliary where she was voted Women of the Year 1981-82. She volunteered with the American Red Cross, coordinating the canteen for blood drives. Together they operated Davis Well Drilling Co, the Roller Drome skating rink, Red Barn Mobile Home Park, and developed Tobacco Rd subdivision. In their early years, they enjoyed square dancing with the Dosta Trotters. She had a “card ministry” sending birthday and special occasion cards to family and friends. She loved her Lord Jesus Christ, the Atlanta Braves, fishing, and her large family. She was known as “Mema” to all who loved her, but Shugah to her granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, her parents, her daughter-in-law, Gail Jones Davis, and granddaughter Nikki Harrell.
Survivors include 3 sons and daughters-in-law: Alan and Laurie Davis of Lake Park GA, Henry and Susan Davis of Bolingbroke GA, Danny and Jill Davis of Valdosta GA; Daughter and Son-in-law: Beth and Wayne Owens of Lake Park GA; Eight Grandchildren: Gannon and Angie Davis, Daphne and Adam Aldinger, Holly and Phillip Greene, Haley and Kemp Newnam, Erin and Kevin Wacter, Emily and Eric Tillman, Lacey and Shad Stephens, and Lindsey and Justin Purvis. This includes 20 precious Great Grandchildren…with special step-grands and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her three siblings: Rev. Dr. John and Eleanor McGowan, Mary Hutchens, and Sam and Nancy McGowan.
A celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, October 31, 2018 in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services with Rev. Dr. John McGowan and Rev. Jimmy Towson officiating. A private family service will be held in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday evening, October 30, 2018 at the funeral home.
