Annie Mae Perdue Gattie

May 20, 1934 — August 12, 2022

Annie Mae Perdue Gattie was born on May 20th, 1934 in Roanoke, Virginia. She went by the name Ann or affectionately called Granny Ann or Ms. Ann. Her parents were: mother, Betty Mae Perdue and her father, Beverly Perdue. Her mom passed the day after Ann was born leaving her to be raised by her grandparents, Johnny and Florence Perdue. After 18 years, Ann left Roanoke and moved to Tampa, FL. Her independent personality and adventurous free spirit took her many places as she embraced life as only she could. Her life on earth ended peacefully on August 12, 2022.
In the late 1980’s, she came into our lives as a steadfast companion to Willie Walker for the next couple of decades. Together they would enjoy their coffee club at the Waffle House, visiting relatives, and traveling to the mountains. He had a green thumb; she did not. However, she was totally content with watching him and his uncanny ability to grow any type of plant. With Willie came an inheritance of family. She developed a special bond with his son, Randy, and in her heart adopted him immediately as her son. She affectionately called Randy “my baby” or “my son”. She gained a son and daughter-in-law who would care for her long after she lost Willie. She had no way of knowing what a role her daughter-in-law would have in her life. Debbie was a dedicated care giver and they both were good company for each other. They shared an immense love and respect for one another.
Aging did not keep her from being the life of the family gatherings. We could always count on her to show up because she loved being with people. Her personality was friendly, pleasant, witty, and always direct. She loved people and animals too. She was the kind of person you would want to be your neighbor. Her neighbors loved her and she would leave the backdoor unlocked for the children to come and go as they please. She would sacrificially give to others when she had very little to give. These attributes never diminished even at 88 years old. She was forthright with her thoughts, which she shared freely. Randy knew she was about to give some of that direct advice when she would begin her conversation with, “Now, son…” And he was sure to listen.
There is a quote that says, “You don’t have to be famous to be important.” Although she may have lived an obscure life, she was an important part of ours. Over the years she has shown us how to live a grateful life. When a person lives almost nine decades and is still giving to others, they will be forever remembered.
She was proceeded in death by her: Parents; Grandparents; two husbands and a companion, Willie Walker.
