Asa Candler "Pete" Newsome, Jr., 79, of Jennings, Florida, passed away peacefully, on September 14, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on October 20, 1944, at the Newsome homestead in Jennings, FL, he was the beloved son of Asa Candler Newsome, Sr. and Hazeleen Hughes Newsome. Growing up on the family farm near the Alapaha River, Asa developed a deep love for the land and the simple pleasures of life in Jennings.
Asa was a dedicated family man and a man of faith. He married Faye Cason, the love of his life, and together they built a strong and loving family. They were set to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in March 2025, a milestone that speaks to their enduring partnership and mutual devotion.
A man known for his tireless work ethic, Asa spent his life working hard, always striving to excel in everything he did. He was a co-founder of Alapaha Construction, a company he helped build from the ground up. Even after his official retirement, Asa continued to stay busy, tending to his yard and garden with the same passion and diligence he brought to his professional life. Every year he would claim it was his last garden, yet every year he would find himself planting once again.
When not working or gardening, Asa was a dedicated member of Oak Grove Church of Christ, where he attended services faithfully. His deep devotion to his faith and community was evident in his regular presence at church and his willingness to lend a helping hand whenever needed.
In the rare moments he wasn’t working, Asa loved watching football, NASCAR races, and college softball. He found great joy in these simple pastimes, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his beloved grandsons, who were a constant source of joy and happiness for him.
Asa is survived by his devoted wife, Faye Cason Newsome, his loving daughters, Angie Newsome Calvert (Jody) of Valdosta, GA and Cathy Newsome Douglas (Ed) of Stockton, GA; his brothers, Ken Newsome (Marsha), Larry Newsome (Lisa), and Gary Newsome (Cindy), all of Jennings, FL; and his sisters, Lynette Wiser (John) of Jennings, FL, and Anne Wilson (Frank) of Valdosta, GA. He leaves behind a legacy through his cherished grandsons, Nathan Calvert, Seth Calvert, Caleb Douglas (Liz), and Eli Douglas.
Asa's life will be honored in a graveside service on Friday, September 20, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Church of Christ Cemetery in Jennings, FL. A visitation will be held Friday, September 20, 2024 at Harry T. Reid Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
