Betty Patten Swindle

Betty Patten Swindle of St. Simons Island, Georgia passed away at her home on July 21, 2015. She was born in Lakeland, Georgia formerly Milltown on May 6, 1922, the daughter of Lawson Leo Patten and Clyde Purcell Patten. Betty graduated from Lanier County High School and the University of Georgia. She remained an ardent Bulldog fan her entire life.

Betty served her country for many years as a civilian employee of Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia, where she worked as a procurement and contracting officer for the United States Air Force. Upon retirement, Betty moved to St. Simons Island, Georgia, where she devoted her time to numerous civic and church-based endeavors, in particular, St. Simons Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder, as president of Presbyterian Women, and as chair of several committees.

Known affectionately to her family as "Bee," she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane Clark and Robert Bugbee of Jacksonville, Florida and her son and daughter-in-law, Buck and Jeanne Swindle of Carrollton, Georgia. Survivors also include her grandchildren, Jason Swindle and wife Shea, Ashley Swindle, Saralyn Swindle Hamilton and husband Stephen, Kristin Swindle Duke, Jamie Swindle, Mark Swindle, Kristen Bugbee Gemeiner and husband Jason, Martin Bugbee, and nine great-grandchildren. Betty is also survived by her sister, Nell Patten Roquemore and seven nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Swindle, and her brother Robert Patten.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 24, 2015, at 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist of Lakeland with burial to follow in Beaver Dam Cemetery in Ray City. The family will receive friends Friday morning July 24, 2015 from 10:00 A.M. to noon at Music Funeral Services in Lakeland.
