Billie Gene Clemens Leavens – 74

Of Lake Park passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011 in Holly Hill Nursing Home. She was born in Byromville, Georgia in 1936 was the only child of Arthur Howard Clemens and Minnie Hanover Hill Clemens. Born prematurely, Mrs. Leavens' first years were chronicled in regional newspapers who dubbed her "Thumbelina" due to her low birth weight of only 24 ounces. Having been raised in rural Dooly County, upon high school graduation Mrs. Leavens went to Macon, Georgia to secretarial school which prepared her for her first job at Warner Robins Air Force Base. There she became a pen pal of a Georgia boy, Robert Lee Leavens, who was serving his country overseas and this correspondence eventually resulted in their marriage. Mrs. Leavens served her country for many years as an Air Force wife and then returned to her Georgia home. At that time, she began working and eventually retired as a snack bar operator for the Georgia Coop for the Blind in both Columbus and Macon, Georgia.

She leaves behind her daughter, Marie L. Guest David, Lake Park, Georgia, a granddaughter, Corrine Sweet Preston, Leesburg, Georgia, and a grandson, Logan Guest, Hahira, Georgia. Mrs. Leavens also had a son, Jimmy Lee Leavens Kyong, and four grandchildren, Zachariah, Daniel, Kim and Gail Leavens of Anchorage, Alaska and London, England. Rose Gaultney of Gray, Georgia was a devoted friend of Mrs. Leavens throughout her years in Macon.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 10, 2011 in Magnolia Park Cemetery, 205 South Pleasant Hill Road, Warner Robins, GA. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Friday, September 9, 2011 at the funeral home.
