Claude Guice, Sr.

January 15, 1925 — March 16, 2008

Of Lakeland died Sunday morning at Crestwood Nursing home in Valdosta. He was born in Greenville, Alabama on January 15, 1925 to the late Jason Greer and Ruby Pritchett Guice.

Guice began his life of service by volunteering, at age seventeen, to fight in World War II as an infantryman. He was awarded the Bronze Star on four separate occasions for bravery under fire.

He was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America for fifty years and won many accolades during this service including: Vigil member of the Alapaha Lodge of the Order of the Arrow, Silver Beaver Award, and the District Award of Merit. He served on the staff of several National Jamborees at Fort A.P Hill in Virginia; walked the mountain trails of Philmont Adventure course in New Mexico with three different groups of Valdosta area boys; and taught several generations of boys their knots.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lakeland where he served for many years as the Sunday school superintendent and as a greeter. He was the Methodist Man of the Year in two separate years.

A life-long member of the Lions Club he served the club as President and on the Flatlander project, among others. He was named Flatlander Man of the Year.

He retired from Georgia Power Company after 39 years, ending his service as the Manager of the Lakeland local office.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Juanita Johnson Guice of Lakeland; Daughter Pamela Eve Guice of Valdosta; son Jason Guice of Homerville; Son Claude Merrill Guice Jr, Daughter-in-Law Frances Smith Guice, grandsons Tristan Andrew and Robin Merrill Guice of Valdosta; one brother Robert Merrill Guice and wife Jewel of Oak Ridge Tennessee. He was preceded in death by brother Jason Greer Guice, Jr and sister Jean Guice Bennett.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2008 in the Lakeland United Methodist Church with the Reverend Rich Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Forest Cemetery in Homerville. The body will be placed in the sanctuary one hour prior to the service.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday night, March 17th at the funeral home. Music Funeral Services of Lakeland.
