Of Brunswick, GA passed away suddenly Thursday morning, July 22, 2004 at his home. He was born March 22, 1943 in Lowndes County, GA and was raised in Lanier County, GA. Dixie moved to St. Simons Island in 1965 where he raised his family, moving to Brunswick in 2000. He owned and operated Murray Landscape Co. Dixie enjoyed golf, fishing and hunting. He was an active member of Brunswick Country Club and member of St. Simons United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Moy Murray, mother & stepfather, Nora Lee and Woodard Bailey, father and mother-in-law, Wallace and Eloise Thigpen.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Ann Thigpen Murray, Brunswick, GA; 2 Sons & Daughter-In-Law, Wade and Kim Murray, Statesboro, GA; Jim Murray, Brunswick, GA; 5 Grandchildren, Anne Tanner Murray, Statesboro, GA; Elizabeth Murray, Statesboro, GA; Corben Murray, Brunswick, GA; Isabelle Murray, Brunswick, GA; Moya Murray, Brunswick, GA; Stepmother, Virginia Giddens, Lakeland, GA; Brother & Sister-In-Law, Steve and Janet Murray, Lakeland, GA; Sister & Brother-In-Law, Joann and Marshal Mathis, Lakeland, GA; 2 Brothers-In-Law & Sisters-In-Law, Jay and Libby Shaw, Lakeland, GA; Jimmy and Sue Benefield, Lakeland, GA; A number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 2004 in Lakeland United Methodist Church, with burial following in Burnt Church Cemetery in Lakeland, GA. Rev. John B. Carroll, Jr. officiated.
Margaret Ann Shaw, Piano, Allison Wray, Organist played for Loyd Shaw who sang "How Great Thou Art" and the congregation sang "Rock of Ages".
Active pallbearers were Sam Shaw, Jason Shaw, Shane Mathis, David Mathis, Blaine Murray and Frank Daughtary.
Visitation with the family was held at Edo Miller & Son Funeral Home in Brunswick from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2004. Dixie was moved to Music Funeral Services in Lakeland, GA for a visitation & funeral service on Sunday.
