Valdosta, GA

Donald “Donny” Stephens Herring, of Valdosta, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on November 14, 2025.

Born on April 3rd in Valdosta, Donny was the beloved son of James F. Herring, Sr. and Bernice Webb Herring. Donny displayed a boundless curiosity about the world and an energy that never seemed to fade. His childhood was shaped by hard work and responsibility—helping in his family’s citrus groves and produce stands in Jacksonville, Florida, and managing a paper route before school each morning. These experiences instilled in him a lifelong work ethic and an unwavering determination.

Donny had a remarkable natural gift for music. He could hear a tune once and play it by ear—whether on the guitar, piano, organ, or through his own singing. Writing music brought him joy, and he performed in numerous bands throughout the years. Even later in life, he continued to sing and play whenever he was able, sharing his talent freely with anyone who would listen. He also loved the freedom of the open road and spent many days riding motorcycles.

In the early 1980s, Donny co-founded Roto-Rooter in Albany, Georgia, alongside Rex and Patricia Mathis Wingate. In December 1981, he was raised as a 32nd Degree Master Mason in the Dougherty Blue Lodge No. 591. His professional accomplishments were vast—Master Plumber, MED Gas/HVAC licensee and instructor, contractor, CDL holder, and trucking company owner, among others. He was, above all, a devoted student of life, always eager to learn something new. His lifelong dream of flying became a reality when he completed his first solo flight on May 20, 1988, and earning his pilot’s license. Donny loved to travel and explore, embracing adventure wherever he found it.

To those who knew him, Donny was unforgettable. He was the man who would give you the shirt off his back, whose handshake was firm enough to leave an impression, and whose generosity knew no limits. He had a quick wit, a charismatic spirit, a storyteller’s charm, and a heart larger than life. He was kind—but not someone you wanted to cross. He was a comedian, a companion, and the life of every gathering. After a life altering accident, he still tried to remain positive and press on in life.

Donny also shared a deep and intimate relationship with his Lord and Savior. He cherished the mysteries and teachings of the Bible and carried his faith openly. When asked what he would say to someone who didn’t believe, he simply replied, “You don’t have to say anything. Evidently, they haven’t had their feet held to a fire—it is then, they will believe without a doubt.” He proudly wore a bracelet that read I Am SECOND and never missed an opportunity to explain its meaning and the role faith played in his life.

Donny was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, cousin, and friend. He loved all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was extremely proud of each of them, never hesitating to brag on them and the joy they brought to his life. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, James “Jimmy” F. Herring, Jr.; daughter, Stephanie Dianne Herring , and Gloria Sue Roberts Herring.
