Dorothy Perkins Thurman – 88
Dorothy P. Thurman of Tampa, FL passed away Friday, October 10, 2008 while staying with her daughter & son-in-law in Valdosta GA. She had been under the care of family, assisted by Hospice of South Georgia for a brief time following a stroke.
Dorothy was born on November 23, 1919 in Barbour County, Alabama to Ernest B. & Nota Mae Hightower Perkins. She grew up on a farm with 10 siblings, graduating from high school in Eufaula, AL at age 16. She graduated from Commercial Business School in Atlanta. It was there she met and wed Sam Davis Thurman on June 12, 1937. They spent most of their married life in Tampa, where they raised 6 children. They were longtime members of Palma Ceia United Methodist Church.
She was a gentle, caring woman, deeply devoted to her family. While raising her children and participating fully in their lives, she also worked full time. She and her husband were the founders of West Coast Duplicating Co., a successful family-run office machine company in Tampa. The business began with sales of old fashioned spirit duplicators, and flourished as it made the transition on through mimeography, offset presses, and then on to copy machines. It still exists today as Zeno Office Solutions.
During their retirement years, Dorothy and Sam traveled all over the world – to Alaska, Australia, Europe, Guam, Hawaii, Mexico and New Zealand. They also enjoyed square dancing with friends. She had been cared for by her children for the last 4 ½ years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years and her eldest son, Sam D. Thurman, Jr.
