Eulalie McDowell Giffen, widow of the late Robert B. Giffen of Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia passed away Sunday, May 30, 2010. Mrs. Giffen resided in Madison, Georgia for most of her early life. She was born in Greenville, Florida on June 9, 1913 to Michael Angelo McDowell and Eulalie Greer McDowell. She was a graduate of the public schools of Madison, Georgia; Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia; and was a graduated from Columbia University School of Journalism in New York City. Her first employment was with the Augusta Chronicle in Augusta, Georgia. Afterwards, she worked for the Atlanta Journal and eventually moved to Washington D.C. where she was a writer for the United Press for twenty years. She covered the first lady, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, on a regular basis. Mrs. Giffen became the first and only newspaper reporter in Washington to interview Mrs. Truman after she became the first lady. She covered the funeral of President Roosevelt for the United Press. Following her marriage to Mr. Giffen she moved to Savannah and was a daily writer for the Savannah Morning News and later became Society Editor. She resided in Thomasville, Georgia for ten years before entering Langdale Place in Valdosta, Georgia. At her death she was living with her great nephew, Brian MacMillan in Valdosta.

Mrs. Giffen a sister of the late Michael A. McDowell, Jr. of Madison and Atlanta, Georgia where he served as chairman of the Department of Music at Agnes Scott College and as organist and choir director at St. Mark United Methodist Church; the late Mrs. Vaughn L. Maxwell of Augusta, Georgia; the late Frank McDowell of Atlanta, Georgia; and the late Mrs. Virginia McDowell Dover of Athens and Sea Island, Georgia.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews and a step daughter, Mrs. Phoebe G. Hood of Hampstead, N.C. and two step sons, General Robert B. Giffen of Colorado Springs, Co. and Dr. John Giffen of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

She will be interred in the family plot at Westview Cemetery in Monticello, Georgia.
