Gary Thomas, 87 years old, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home in the early morning on May 29, 2025. He was born on August 25, 1937 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania to the late Edwin William Thomas and Martha Harriet (Betts) Thomas. Gary proudly served his country in the United States Navy where he was assigned to USS Cavalier for four years. He later dedicated the next 27 years of his life to the City of Miami Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of District Fire Chief. After retiring in 1985, Gary and his family made their home in Valdosta, Georgia. There, he quickly became an integral part of the community, forging lasting friendships through the local tennis scene and as a devoted supporter of Christ Episcopal Church.
Known for his warm heart and infectious sense of humor, Gary never met a stranger. He had a remarkable gift for making others feel welcome and bringing joy to those around him. His legacy is one of kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family and friends. Gary will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Joshua; his sister, Joyce; and his brother, Wayne.
Gary is survived by his life partner and best friend, Nancy Lutsko; his daughters, Delilah Thomas of Tallahassee and Priscilla Thomas of Valdosta; as well as four sisters and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Special Olympics.
The family is having a memorial service honoring Gary’s life at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at Christ Episcopal Church, 1521 North Patterson Street, Valdosta, Georgia 31602.
