Harold Carter

June 3, 1935 — June 27, 2025

Harold “Hal” Carter, aged 90, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 27, 2025. Born on June 3, 1935, in Stone, Kentucky, Hal was the beloved son of the late Cora and Virgil Carter.
Hal proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1962, achieving the rank of Sergeant. Following his military service, he earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Special Education from Indiana State University. He also obtained his Indiana Life Teacher’s License in Secondary Education, Elementary Education, and Special Education — reflecting his lifelong dedication to helping children learn and thrive.
Hal devoted his career to teaching in the Indianapolis public school system, including George Washington High School and the Metropolitan School District of Perry Township. His kindness, patience, and commitment left a lasting impact on countless students, families, and colleagues. In recognition of his devoted and distinguished service to children and the community, Hal was honored with an Honorary Life Membership in the Indiana Congress of Parents and Teachers, Inc.
Later in life, Hal moved to Valdosta, Georgia, where he remained deeply engaged in his community. He was a member of the Valdosta Elks Lodge No. 728, Valdosta Theatre Guild, Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts, Valdosta Choral Guild, Lowndes County Historical Society and Friends of the Library with the South Georgia Regional Public Library. Hal also loved helping those in need and generously volunteered with The American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, United Way, Damien Center, and several hospice agencies.
Hal and his beloved wife, Elma Brooks Carter, were enthusiastic world travelers who shared a passion for discovering new places and cultures. Together, they collected teapots, china, paperweights, and other cherished relics from their journeys, filling their home with memories of a life beautifully lived together.
Among the things Hal treasured most was spending time and reminiscing with his fellow school-teacher friends, fondly known as “The Lincoln Legends,” whose friendship brought him laughter and joy through the years.
Hal was predeceased by his wife, Elma, his parents and his sisters, Emogene Johnson and Agnes Francis.
He is survived by his brother, Terry Carter (Linda); his sister, Delores Kelly; and by special relatives James “Jimmy” and Adelma Johnson, Scott Brooks, Matthew Brooks, Beth Brooks Miller, Amy Stephenson Kauffman, and Todd Stephenson. Hal is also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, and a special friend and caregiver, Justin Anderson.
Per his wishes, Hal will be cremated and interred alongside his beloved Elma in their mausoleum in Greenwood, Indiana. He requested no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heart of Hospice or the charity closest to your heart.
Hal will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his warmth, wisdom humor, generous heart, and lifelong dedication to helping others.
