James Preston “J.P” Barker, age 94, of Valdosta, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2026. He was. born in Valdosta, GA on November 8, 1931, to parents, Johnnie Lynwood Barker and Mary Sue (Coker) Barker Youmans.
J.P. dedicated more than 40 years of his life working as a vendor for Tom’s Foods, where he was known for his strong work ethic, friendly personality, and the relationships he built throughout the years. He also proudly served his country in the United States Air Force followed by civil service at Moody Air Force Base, carrying with him a deep sense of honor and patriotism.
Above all, J.P. was a devoted husband, sharing 70 beautiful years of marriage with the love of his life, Kathryn. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and unconditional love. He found great joy in both freshwater and saltwater fishing, often happiest with a fishing pole in hand and surrounded by those he loved most.
J.P. cherished every moment spent with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren, who brought endless pride and happiness to his life. A faithful member of Providence Methodist Church, he lived his life with kindness, humility, and compassion. He was also deeply involved in the Brooks County community, where he was respected and loved by many whose lives were touched by his warm spirit and generous heart. He was referred to as “A pillar of the church and its community.”
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lois B. Cooper; brother-in-law, Jack Cooper; brother Johnnie L. Barker and grandson Joseph Masisak.
J.P. is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Kathryn Johnson Barker; daughter, Jan Barker Masisak; son, Jim (Robin) Barker; grandchildren, Cara Masisak, of Cockran, GA, Preston Barker of Valdosta, GA, Brandon Barker of Valdosta, GA and Katie Barker of Valdosta, GA and great granddaughter, Madylen Masisak of Cochran, GA.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Providence Community Church, 1041 Valdosta Hwy Quitman, GA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Kind words and expressions of sympathy can be left for the family at www.musicfuneralservices.com. The Barker family is being served by the professional and caring staff of Music Funeral Services of Valdosta.
