Dr. James Joseph Peterson "Jim", PhD- 59
Of Valdosta, GA passed away at Langdale Hospice house on August 6th, 2015 after an extended illness. He was born on February 4, 1956, in Wilmington, NC, to John Thomas Peterson, Sr. and the late Mildred Kermon Peterson. He lived many years in Pierce County Georgia where he graduated from Blackshear High School in 1974. Along with his mother, he was preceded in death by an older brother, John T. Peterson, Jr. He received his PhD in Education from Georgia State University in Philosophy. He was an adjunct professor for Valdosta State University and Embry Riddle at Moody Air Force Base. He served many years in the medical technology field working for the state of Georgia, multiple local hospitals as well as taught Medical technology at Waycross Ware Technical College. He also served as a contractor in Federal Law Enforcement with FEMA and as a police officer for the Waycross Police department. Mr. Peterson was a member of the National Rifle Association NRA and an avid firearms collector. He enjoyed teaching, giving individual firearm lessons, as well as hunting and fishing. He was a fan of the University of Georgia athletics, Valdosta State athletics and the Atlanta Braves. He attended Morningside Baptist Church and was a member of Morningside Rusty Harrell Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his Father and Step-Mother John Thomas Peterson, Sr. Lorraine of Waycross, GA; Son Andrew Peterson of Naples, FL; Son Matthew Peterson Whitney of Mooresville, NC; Sons Daniel, and Stephen Peterson of Valdosta, GA; Sister Deborah Peterson of Valdosta, GA; Brother Gary L. Peterson of Columbus, GA; Fiancé Tammy Steverson of Valdosta; and Special Friends Dave and Lisa Eaton, and Don and Tammie Potter; and numerous Nieces and Nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 8, 2015 in Morningside Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time on Saturday.
