Joe B. Crane

Dr. Joe Bower Crane Sr., 85, passed away on Tuesday, October 17th, 2006 at the South Georgia Medical Center.

Dr. Crane was born in Dixie, Georgia on June 14th, 1921. He was the son of Joe Brewer and Kittie Lee Bower Crane. He graduated from the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine, opened his practice in Valdosta, Georgia in March of 1943, and continued practicing up until his death.

Dr. Crane was active in numerous community, professional, and alumni organizations throughout his career. He was a charter member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church; the last living charter member, past president and member of the board of directors of the Valdosta Touchdown Club, serving since 1945; a former president and member of the Valdosta Rotary Club since 1945; a former member and chairman of the Valdosta City Board of Education for 31 years; a board member of the Georgia Sheriff’s Boys Ranch; director emeritus of the Georgia Agri-Business Council; and he was selected as the outstanding Agri-Business Man by the Valdosta / Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce in 1983. Dr. Crane was named the Veterinarian of the Year by his colleagues in the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association in 1988; he was elected to two, five-year terms on the Georgia Board of Veterinary Medicine; served on the Auburn Alumni Advisory Council to the School of Veterinary Medicine, was named a distinguished alumnus in 1996; and was on the board of directors of the National Auburn Alumni Association. Dr. Crane was an inspiration to all who knew him, not only for his dedication to the practice of veterinary medicine, but because of his personal integrity, his willingness to give himself to his community, and for his undying love for Auburn University and the Valdosta City School System.

Dr. Crane was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ann Groover Crane.
He is survived by two daughters and sons in law, Kitty and Freddie Brogdon of Lilburn, and Pat and John Mason of Dunwoody; one son and daughter in law, Linda and Joe Bower Crane II of Valdosta; four granddaughters, Kimberly and Amhed Colon, Helen and Roy Gullage, Leslie and Michael O’Kelley, and Lindsey and Ryan Cooper; two grandsons, Alan and Lori-Anne Brogdon and Joby and Rylin Crane; and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 3PM on Saturday, October 21st at Park Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. V.L. Daughtery, Rev. John Harris and Rev. Lance Kindred officiating. Burial followed in the Dixie Cemetery in Brooks County, GA. Dr. Crane will lie in state 1 hour prior to services.
