John Maury Branan passed away at his home in Valdosta on April 18, 2007.
He was born October 25, 1933 to the late Roger Leo and Lala Crapps Branan in Tallahassee, FL. John married Virginia McKissick in 1957. He received his undergraduate and graduate education at the University of Florida, culminating in a doctoral degree in counseling psychology in 1965. Subsequently he was Director of Counseling at Berry College and then moved to Valdosta in 1966, where he was a professor at Valdosta State University until his retirement in 1994. At Valdosta State, Dr. Branan served as the Psychology and Counseling Department Head from 1967-1973 and was named Professor Emeritus upon his retirement.
John and Virginia were active members of the Valdosta Unitarian-Universalist Church for many years. He also served as the President of the International Club. John authored two books, A Penny for Your Thoughts, which was a tribute to his daughter, and The Future Makers, a science fiction novel. He also contributed to several textbooks, journal publications and various continuing education course materials.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Penny in 1992 and his wife Virginia in 2006. He is survived by his son John, Jr., daughter-in-law Jil, grandsons Kenyon and Steve, all of Newton, NH; brother Roger Branan and his wife Barbara of Jacksonville, Fl; sister-in-law Jean McKissick and Kerry Williams of West Palm Beach, Fl; brother-in-law George McKissick of Tampa, Fl; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating his life was led by Rev. Mary Louise DeWolf on Tuesday evening, April 24 at 6:30 PM at the Valdosta Unitarian-Universalist Church, 1951 East Park Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the American Cancer Society or the Valdosta Unitarian-Universalist Church.
