John Samuel Grier, Jr. – 86
Also known as Sam Grier, of Saint Mary’s, GA passed away peacefully on Monday, March 25, 2019 following a brief illness. He was born on June 10, 1932, in Eufala, AL to the late John Samuel and Essie Morgan Grier. He is also preceded in death by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 50 years, Irmarie Rogers Grier.
After 44 years of service, he retired from Gilman Paper Mill as the Maintenance Supervisor. He was an accomplished carpenter at heart and trade that always believed in doing it right the first time. He was a Master Gardener that loved to plant flowers and grow vegetables year round. He loved to cook and barbeque as he was also the owner and operator of Doug’s Drive In, located in Kingsland, Woodbine, and St. Mary’s, GA. He was always kind and generous to those in need and loved to teach others.
He is survived by his five children and their spouses, John S. and Roberta Grier III of Cookeville, TN, Douglas A. Grier of Wakefield, Nebraska, Delphine L. and Rufus McQuaig of Waycross, GA, Kathryn M. and David Fischer of Anchorage, AK, Beth M. and Wendell Holmes of St. Mary’s, Ga, 22 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, sister Nancy Burke of Thomasville, GA, and brother Irvin Grier of Valdosta, GA. He is also survived by his companion for the last 19 years, Mary Hoover and her children, Lisa, Melissa, Craig and 12 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, March 30, 2019 at Friendship Cemetery located in Hahira, GA. No formal public visitation will be held. Sympathy may be expressed online at
