Jon Gordon Burkhart

July 5, 1937 — November 16, 2009

Of Lakeland, passed away Monday morning November 16, 2009 in South Georgia Medical Center after declining health for a short period of time. He was born July 5, 1937 in Urich, Missouri to the late Glenn Henry & Wilma Jean Hillebrand Burkhart. He was a Vietnam Veteran having served more than 20 years in the United States Air Force. Following retirement from the Air Force he began his second career as a High School Educator at Lanier County High where he taught Social Studies until June of 2003. His love for sports led him to serve as a High School Official for more than 30 years and also served as Head Coach for the Baseball Team. He is preceded in death by his wife Sandra Thompson Burkhart and a sister Glenda Jean Kratzberg.

A Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2009 in the Lakeland Chapel of Music Funeral Services. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery where full Military Honors will be rendered. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, November 18, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to one of the following charities: American Diabetes Association, Wounded Warriors, St. Jude’s Children Hospital and American Cancer Society.
