Larry Mixson Sheffield – 73 of Naylor, Georgia, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 19, 2020, while at his home. He was born on May 21, 1947 in Valdosta, Georgia, to the late Catherine (Herndon) and Clarence Sheffield. Larry was a graduate of Valdosta High School, Class of 1965. After his graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. He subsequently went on to serve 20 years in the United States Air Force. Larry was a fighter from the start of his life. He was born premature, weighing only 2 lbs. 10 oz. His parents graciously named him after the doctor who saved his life, Dr. Joyce Mixson. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, and hunting. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers Burton, Billy, Charles, and Jerry Sheffield, and his sister Margaret (Sheffield) Smith.
Survivors include his loving wife, caretaker, and best friend Paula (Swindell) Sheffield of Naylor, GA; Children: Cathy Rogers of Montgomery, AL, Andy Sheffield of Valdosta, GA, April Weeks and her husband Chris of Gainesville, FL; Granddaughter, Courtney Sheffield Youland and her husband Jake of Wetumpka, AL; Great Grandsons, Sadler Sheffield and Gaines Youland of Wetumpka, AL; Siblings: Mary Catherine Sheffield of Parker, CO, Dorothy Skiles of Orange, TX, Nancy Parker and her husband Bill of Valdosta, GA, Sisters-in-Law, Betty Faye Sheffield of Valdosta, GA; Jean Sheffield of Kennesaw, GA; and Clare P. Sheffield of Rochester, NY; Mother-in-Law, Barbara Swindell of Naylor, GA; Father-in-Law, Paul Swindell and his wife Mary of Valdosta, GA; Numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A memorial service honoring Larry’s life will be held at a later date to allow for full military honors and additional family and friends. Per his wishes, his ashes will be spread at his two favorite hunting and fishing places.
