MR. LAWRENCE GAY - 90
Mr. Lawrence Gay, 90, who for the past two years has lived in Homestead, FL, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Kindred Hospital in Miami, FL after an extended illness. Mr. Gay, a Moultrie, GA native has since retirement also lived in Johnson City, TN. and Montgomery, TX.
Born Jan. 9, 1917, Mr. Gay lived in Colquitt County, GA. with brief exceptions, until after retirement. Mr. Gay was the son of the late Matthew Alexander Gay and Bessie Mae Wilkes Gay. Mr. Gay is predeceased by his wife Mary Alma Hughes Gay originally from Lakeland, GA. and his sisters Dora Lee Causey, Beatrice Guarino, and Vivian Williams.
As a teenager and young man, Mr. Gay farmed in Colquitt County and had worked for Swift & Company in Moultrie, prior to his enlistment in the US Navy.
Mr. Gay was a veteran of World War II. Based in Hawaii, Mr. Gay performed aircraft maintenance and flew as a gunner on anti-submarine patrols in PBY Catalina flying boats. After the war, Mr. Gay returned to his job at Swift & Company until he retired in 1972.
While working at Swift & Company, Mr. Gay also operated his own business, Gays Venetian Blind Services, in Moultrie. After retiring from Swift & Company he changed his companys name to Gays Aluminum Products which he continued to operate until retiring again in 1979.
Mr. Gay was for most of his adult life, a deacon and teacher at Calvary Baptist Church and then for years a member of Trinity Baptist Church, where he also taught, until moving from Moultrie, later in life.
Mr. Gay served the community while living in Moultrie. Among his activities was chairmanship of the Colquitt County Red Cross, for a number of years, which included assisting families during the Vietnam War, he was elected to multiple terms as a member of Moultrie Board of Education during the period leading up to the city and county school boards merger, and he served several years as corporate advisor to the Junior Achievement.
At the age of 88, Mr. Gay returned to his farming roots moving to Homestead, FL and assisting his son, Lawrence Gay Jr., with the upkeep and maintenance of a grove of longan and lycee trees. During the same period, Mr. Gay took up the game of golf
Survivors of Mr. Gay include; two daughters, Dr. Beth Duncan, Johnson City, TN. and Mahalie Fulton, Potomac MD.; three sons, Lawrence Gay Jr., Homestead, FL, Bill Gay, Colorado Springs, CO, and John Gay, Houston, TX; eleven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, in the Lakeland Chapel of Music Funeral Services, 402 West Main St., Lakeland, GA 31635 Phone#229-482-3385. Burial followed in the Burnt Church cemetery.
