Lawton James "Jimmy" Hughes

Lawton James “Jimmy” Hughes, age 79, of Valdosta, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at his daughter’s residence in Moody, Alabama, after a brief illness. Jimmy was born in Jasper, Florida on June 17, 1943, to the late Mary Dell Kent Hughes and Lawton Hughes. Jimmy was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He built a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry at the Valdosta Drug Company and later retired from JM Smith Corporation. In his younger years he enjoyed camping, fishing and clogging as a member of the Timberland Cloggers. In his later years he spent the majority of his time perfecting his yards and visiting his children and their families near and far. He was a longtime member of Francis Lake Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Barbara Howell Hughes of Valdosta, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law, Jayme Hughes and wife Tammy of Maumelle, Arkansas, a daughter, Deidre Anne Gregoire of Destin, Florida, daughter and son-in-law, Christy Watson and husband Mason of Moody, Alabama and a son, Kent Hughes of Lake Park, Georgia; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a brother, Wayne Hughes of Homerville, Georgia. In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Hughes Turner.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock pm, Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Music Funeral Services, Valdosta Chapel. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens.
