Of Valdosta passed away Tuesday October 19, 2004 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born in Lanier County on May 9, 1933 to the late Lonnie G. & Eula Mae Maughon. After retiring from the United States Air Force with 22 years of service, he worked with K-Mart for 15 years. After his retirement from K-Mart, he owned and operated with his wife, Betty, The Backstop Sport Collectibles Shop for 7 years, before retiring due to declining health. Three sisters, Dorothy Maughon, Mary Waller, Maxine McClain, and his brother, Kenneth Maughon, preceded him in death.

Graveside services were held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday October 23, 2004 in Greenlawn Cemetery in Lakeland, GA. with the Rev. Scott Tomlinson officiating. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of South Georgia, P.O. Box 1727, Valdosta, Georgia 31603 or The American Cancer Society, 323 Pine Avenue, Albany, Georgia 31701.
