Marguerite P. Smith McCarney, beloved daughter of Edward and Ann Smith and sister of Edward J. Smith III, passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the age of 83. Her life was defined by curiosity, kindness, and a deep appreciation for both the natural world and human connection.
Known lovingly as Margie, she was a lifelong learner and generous spirit who loved travel, reading, and the outdoors. She cherished quiet moments with her late husband, Joseph McCartney- sharing books, tea and thoughtful conversation. To know Margie was to be welcomed into meaningful discussions about life, learning and living well.
Margie devoted more than 30 years to teaching science in the Ridgewood, New jersey school district, with a focus on life science and biology. An inspiring educator, she brought lessons to life through enthusiasm, patience, and an unwavering belief in every student's potential. Her classroom was a place where curiosity was encouraged, and young minds were guided to think critically and with wonder.
After retiring, Margie and Joe moved to Georgia, where she remained deeply engaged in her community and local parish. Later settling in Lake Park, she embraced retirement, new friendships, and time with loved ones.
Above all, Margie found her greatest joy in family. She was a devoted wife and a loving aunt to her nieces and nephews, treasuring time spent together and supporting them through life's milestones.
Margie also found joy in art, music, and creative expressions, particularly through ceramics and pottery. Travel continued to inspire her, offering opportunities to learn and reflect.
Margie is survived by her brother Edward, her nieces and nephews, and the many loved ones she touched through teaching and conversation. She is now reunited with her beloved husband Joe, leaving the world better than she found it.
