Marilyn Mathes Burgin Fox
2/24/1933-6/6/2026
At 93 years of age, Marilyn ran into the arms of her Heavenly Father to live forever more. Throughout her life she was a vibrant, active witness for Him until an illness slowed her down in her last year.
A student of God’s word all her life, she loved teaching Bible studies, Sunday school and directing choirs. In her later years, she enjoyed doing devotionals for her ladies’ circle group and working at the church clothes closet. She always researched everything and usually crafted a token of remembrance for each person attending. Her favorite thing was planning theme parties for Senior adults and had published, “Senior Moments”, a guide for such parties. She was a member of Park Avenue Church.
Marilyn was also an award-winning florist. Her shop, “Something Beautiful”, in Tallahassee, was a wonderland of décor and flowers. Even after leaving Tallahassee, she continued to work out of her home, crafting arrangements for any occasion.
Born in Morristown, Tennessee, then moving to White Pine, Tennessee, she loved the Smoky Mountains, visiting as often as possible; at one point, moving back to White Pine for several years.
A child of the Great Depression, she learned early how to economize in hard times. She became an avid thriftier who would spend hours to find the best items. She loved to shop at thrift stores not only to save money, but just for the adventure of it.
Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents, William Dean and Davee Louise (Walker) Mathes, three husbands, Gordon Burgin (father of her children); Jim Kontener; Doyle Fox and grandson James Bailey Burgin, Jr.
She leaves behind her children, Rebecca Mullican (Roger), James Bailey Burgin (Stella) and Judy Ward. She lovingly helped raise her 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren who all knew and loved her as Meemee.
