Mary Kathleen (Johnson) Edmondson was born in rural Illinois on January 3, 1948, to Edna and Harold Johnson, as the youngest of four children. As a child, she enjoyed climbing trees and playing in orchards near her home. Mary attended nursing school and became a registered nurse, which gave her many opportunities to live and work throughout the United States, eventually moving overseas to Germany. While living in Germany, she was able to travel and explore western Europe. These trips generated stories that were shared all through the years. Mary was married to Vaughan Edmondson in May of 1977. They welcomed two children into their lives: Andrew in 1978 and Daniel in 1979. The family eventually settled in Chester, VA, where she settled into life as a homemaker and mother. She enjoyed helping her community and singing in the church choir with Vaughan, which later led to her working as a part-time administrative assistant at the church. After retirement, both Vaughan and Mary moved to his childhood home in Barney, GA. Following the passing of her husband, Mary eventually made one more move to San Diego, CA, to be closer to her children and grandchild Sydney. She enjoyed exploring this new city, taking long drives along the coast, relaxing in Andrew’s backyard with family and friends, and watching Sydney grow up. Mary was a relatively quiet person, content in listening to the stories of others and interjecting when necessary. Her mind remained sharp and her memory infallible to the smallest detail. She loved all of her cats and other various pets. As the mother of two boys, her patience was tested but rarely broken. She made friends easily and always enjoyed a good conversation. Above all else, she was a gentle and loving person to everyone, especially to her family. Mary passed away November 28, 2022, in San Diego at the age of 74, joining her parents, husband, brother Richard Johnson, sister Marlene Carlson, and many other family members who loved her. She is survived by her son Daniel Edmondson, son and daughter-in-law Andrew and Laura Edmondson, grandchild Sydney, and brother and sister-in-law Roger and Gail Johnson. She is eternally loved and dearly missed.
