On November 18, 2015 Mary C. Guthrie, beloved family matriarch took the hand of her savior Jesus Christ and left this earthly life and entered into her eternal rest in the Berrien Nursing Center in Nashville, Georgia. She was born in Kearney, New Jersey on March 27, 1922 to Italian Immigrant parents, Carmelo and Teresa Costantino. In 1944 she moved to Valdosta, Georgia with her father Carmelo Costantino when he established the Christian Home Mission on N. Lee Street. Prior to their move to Valdosta, she traveled with her father on evangelistic meetings and taught herself to play the piano at the age of eight. She was a member of the Rosedale Church of God and was a licensed minister in the Church of God for many years. In 1962, she met and married James L. Guthrie, Sr and for many years they traveled singing with Gospel groups throughout the area. She was employed at the Plantation Restaurant for many years prior to beginning work at Crackin Good Bakers from which she retired in 1979. After her retirement she worked for many restaurants in the area. She was a lifelong member of the DAV Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers Raymond V. Costantino, Frank N. Costantino, Bill J. Costantino, Oresto Costantino, an infant child and a grandson Jeremy Scott Shumate.

Survivors include: 3 Sons and Daughters-in-law; Rev. Eddie and Helen Shumate; Eatonton, Georgia; Raymond and Cheri Shumate; Sevierville, Tennessee, Rev. James L. Jr. and Linda Guthrie; Valdosta, Georgia, 1 Sister, Ida C. Kiser; St. Augustine, Florida, Grandchildren: Adecia Shumate, Atlanta, Georgia, Angela Shumate; Sevierville, Tennessee, Jonnie and Tabitha Shumate; Cleveland, Tennessee, Benjamin Shumate; Eatonton, Georgia, Seven great grandchildren: Neenah Shumate; Cleveland, Tennessee, Esther Shumate; Cleveland, Tennessee, Paul Shumate; Cleveland, Tennessee, Jade Shumate; Cleveland, Tennessee, Matthew Shumate; Sevierville, Tennessee, Tyler Shumate; Sevierville, Tennessee, Hailey Givens; Sevierville, Tennessee, one great great grandchild, Liam Shumate; Sevierville, Tennessee, and a number of nephews, nieces and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 22, 2015 in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services with Rev. Mike Stone, Rev. Jonnie Shumate and Rev. Michael Bass officiating. Committal Service will follow at 3:45 p.m. in Guthrie Cemetery in Berrien County, Georgia. The family will host a visitation for friends from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. on November 21, 2015 and from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Sunday November 22, 2015. Flowers will be accepted, however, the family suggests memorial contributions may be sent to the charity of your choice or to family designated charities on a list available from the funeral home office.
