Mary Barb Day Nelson
passed away Saturday, September 24, 2005, at home in Hahira, GA from complications of Parkinsons Disease.
Mary was born November 21, 1928, in David, Republic of Panama to George Dumitru and Hortensia Canto Barb. She met the love of her life, Allen H. Bud Day while working in a U.S. Army payroll office in the Panama Canal Zone. They married in Houston, Texas on October 25, 1942. Captain Day was killed in an aircraft accident while serving on active duty in the United States Air Force on February 9, 1959.
On November 1, 1968, she married Lt. Col ret Raymond B. Nelson, who preceded her in death on September 28, 1992.
She is survived by her two loving daughters and their husbands, Vicki and Charles Friend of Alamogordo, NM, and Samantha and David Peterson of Hahira, GA ; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Scott and Kathleen Owen of San Diego, CA, and their children Emelia and Jace; Jennifer and Ryan Haskell of Dell Rapids, SD, and their son Augustus; Kurt Peterson of Nashville, TN; Kyle and Kelly Peterson of Hahira, GA; and by her brother, Eli Barb of Los Angeles, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, George, John and Dan Barb.
She was a dedicated American Red Cross Gray Lady volunteer for over 25 years, and later worked at the American Cancer Society Lady Bug Boutique thrift store in Orlando, Florida, where she lived from 1962 until moving to Valdosta in 1998.
She was a member of Bemiss United Methodist Church, an energetic & devoted grandmother, who taught her grandchildren many skills, including the game of tennis, of which she was an avid player. She competed in league bowling for many years, and routinely jogged two miles per day until she became ill.
