Michael Henry Garner, Sr., age 79, of Valdosta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 4, 2024, at Presbyterian Home in Quitman, Georgia. Born on February 23, 1945, in Camden, Arkansas, to the late Homer Henry and Dorothy Lurline (Greening) Garner, Michael was a passionate reader, teacher, and history enthusiast. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially playing tennis and golf, and he was an avid traveler, embarking on road trips and cruises. A dedicated gardener, he took pride in growing vegetables, particularly tomatoes and peppers. Michael earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Pepperdine University and went on to complete a doctorate in education at Auburn University, fostering his dedication to academic excellence and his passion for inspiring future generations. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his cousins, Waymon Greening and Sherri Greening, who were like siblings to him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of over 52 years, Diane Garner; his sons, Mike Garner, Jr. and wife Emily of Hahira, Georgia, and Cary Garner and wife Lana of Peachtree Corners, Georgia; and his cherished grandchildren, Lauren, Breanne, and Matthew. He also leaves behind his brother, Terry Garner and wife Donna of Tucson, Arizona; his niece, Christine Hyde and husband Ryan of Orange, California; his great-niece, Ellianna Hyde; and his cousin, Jerry Bradshaw and wife Evie.
A Celebration of Life Reception will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the Christian Church at Rome, in Rome, Georgia, 2417 Shorter Ave. Rome, Georgia 30165. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Highland Christian Academy in Valdosta, Georgia (
