Paul Alonzo Swindell

February 10, 1935 — March 24, 2026

Valdosta

Paul Alonzo Swindell, age 91, of Valdosta, Georgia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by comfort and love, at Fellowship Home Brookside, on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. He was a devoted Christian, loving father, proud veteran, and faithful servant to others. Mr. Swindell was born on February 10, 1935, to the late Bernard and Rose Adelaide Swindell in Jesup, Georgia. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his sons, Timothy Shane Swindell and David Kipley Swindell; son-in-law, Larry Mixson Sheffield; brothers, Bernard Swindell, Jr., James F. Swindell, and Dan Swindell; daughter, Julie Bush; maternal grandparents, William Isham and Addie Daniel Stafford.

Paul is survived by his wife, Mary Swindell of Valdosta, GA; daughter, Paula Sheffield of Naylor, GA; granddaughter, April Weeks (Chris) of High Springs, FL; son, Jeff Wetherington of Valdosta, GA; grandchildren, Rhiannon Bush of Salt Lake City, UT, Zachary Wetherington (Ashley) of Charleston, SC; brother, Tom Swindell (Loralee) of Athens, GA; sisters-in-law, Beth Swindell of Kettering, OH, and Dayle Johnson of Griffin, GA, along with two great grandchildren.

First and foremost, Paul was a man of deep and abiding faith. He loved God, his family, and his church, and he lived that faith out daily through quiet acts of service and compassion. For many years, he faithfully served at Northside Baptist Church in Valdosta, where he ministered to others by visiting the elderly, those unable to leave their homes, and individuals in hospitals, nursing homes, and hospice. His presence brought comfort, encouragement, and a reminder that no one was forgotten.

Paul proudly served his country, beginning in the Naval Reserve and continuing with over 22 years of honorable service in the United States Air Force. As a paratrooper and Vietnam War veteran, he carried a deep sense of pride in his service. That pride was evident to all who knew him, as he was rarely seen without a hat reflecting his love for his country and his fellow veterans.

During his time in the Air Force, Paul was stationed in Germany, where he embraced the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and experience the richness of other cultures. In his younger years, he was also an accomplished boxer, winning the welterweight division—a testament to his strength, discipline, and determination.

After retiring from the Air Force, Paul continued his working life with Lane Renfroe at Chemical Specialties, where he found great satisfaction in applying his skills and talents, particularly in working with OSHA regulations. He valued both the work and the relationships he built during that time.

Paul had a creative and attentive spirit that showed in everything he did. He was gifted in the art of wood inlay, creating pieces that reflected both patience and craftsmanship. He was also an avid golfer and a devoted fan of Georgia Bulldogs football, always enjoying the moments spent following his team.

At home, Paul took great pride in his yard, keeping it beautifully manicured and contributing to the charm of his neighborhood. His care extended beyond his own home, as he was always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors, assisting with their yards whenever he could.

More than his accomplishments, Paul will be remembered for his giving and serving heart. He lived a life marked by humility, kindness, and a genuine desire to care for others. His legacy is one of faith, service, strength, and love—a life well lived and a man who made a lasting difference in the lives of so many.

The family of Mr. Swindell would like to extend a very special thanks to Hospice of South Georgia and Hospice Nurse Betsy Garland for their care and attention during his stay at Fellowship Home at Brookside.
