Pearl O. Gillis 93
Of Lakeland, GA passed away late Thursday afternoon September 21, 2006 in the Louis Smith Memorial Hospital in Lakeland after a lengthy illness. She was born December 25, 1912 in Coinjock, Outer Banks NC, Pearl loved her family and enjoyed growing up in the Outer Banks.. Her family later moved to Woolford, MD which is near Cambridge. While in NC she came in contact with the Adventist message and was baptized. Later she wanted to tell others about the message, she went to Washington Missionary College about 1938 to be a Bible Worker. While doing Bible Work her desire to be a nurse grew in her heart until she decided to give up her present work and go back to school. She graduated from Washington Sanitarium with a BS degree in nursing and received her RN. She found she could combine spiritual and health together. Nurse Pearl as many called her wanted to help where she was needed as a nurse. She went to Wyethville, VA, Avon Park, FL, and Ellijay GA before moving to Lakeland and making this her home. She worked at Louis Smith Memorial Hospital in Lakeland many years before retirement. While in college a professor discovered her ability to sing, she joined the a cappella choir traveled many miles performing. She brought this musical ability to the Lakeland Seventh Day Adventist Church as a charter member on March 1, 1969, serving as the Music Director and pianist 20 plus years. An ambassador of good will to the community she arranged many music programs, as well as sang in many other churches during her faithful service.
