Philip "Goose" Simpson – 78

Of Lakeland, GA passed away early Tuesday morning, August 2, 2016 at his residence. He was born on April 25, 1938 in Dixie, GA to the late Emmett and Mary Elizabeth Smith Simpson. Philip graduated from Dixie High School where he first earned the nickname "Goose" after the legendary player, Goose Tatum of the Harlem Globe Trotters. He went on to play at ABAC where he was selected for All American Status. At that time he was honored with "Philip Simpson" Day in Brooks County. He later became a two year starter at UGA where he was MVP in his Junior season and team Captain in his Senior year. While at UGA, Philip received the Joe Jordan Memorial Trophy and in 2008 he was inducted into the ABAC Hall of Fame. He was a farmer and retired from Patten Seed Company after 20 years of service. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Annette Price, and a brother, Hulett Simpson.

Survivors include his: Wife, Wanda Touchton Simpson of Lakeland, GA; Sons & Daughters-in-Law, Larry & Dana Simpson of Valdosta, GA, Craig & Yvette Strickland of Jacksonville, FL, Curtis & Christie Strickland of Lakeland, GA; Daughters & Sons-in-Law, Tammy & Dewayne Pate of Tifton, GA, Kristen & Jeff Ley of Lakeland, GA; 13 Grandchildren: Christine and Andrew Pate, Caylah, Cerrah and Breanna Strickland, Alena and Alicia Strickland, Jacob Wilson, Winter Simpson, Kiersten, Asa, Kailin and Kyleigh Ley; 1 Great Grandchild: Aubrie Pate; Brother & Sister-in-Law, Jay & Edwina Simpson of Dixie, GA; Sisters & Brother-in-Law, Sandra & Herb Wetherington of Boston, GA, Ginger & Dan Forgoine of Quitman, GA and a host of nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00PM on Friday, August 5, 2016 at Southside Baptist Church with graveside services at 5:00PM in the Dixie Cemetery in Dixie, GA. Mr. Simpson will be placed in the church one hour prior to service. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 4, 2016 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at the funeral home.
