Raymond Moore, 84, of Naylor, Georgia, passed away on February 28, 2024. He was born November 20, 1939, in Lakeland, Georgia, to the late Robert and Codie Moore.
Raymond was a 1957 graduate of Lanier County High School in Lakeland, Georgia. In 1960, he joined the United States Air Force where he proudly served for eight years. In 1962, he met and married the love of his life, Wendy Elizabeth Wells. They were married for 60 years before her death in 2023.
Upon leaving the Air Force, Raymond entered Valdosta State College where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1971. He then began a career in teaching and coaching at his Alma Mater, Lanier County High. During this time, he continued at Valdosta State where he earned a Master of Education degree and an Education Specialist degree. After 30 years, he retired in 2001 as the Superintendent of Lanier County Schools.
Throughout their life, he and Wendy enjoyed traveling together. While in the Air Force, they spent time in Holland, Germany, and Tacoma, Washington. Following their retirement, they traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Scotland, and the Caribbean. As a lover of United States History, he was proud of the fact that he and Wendy visited all 50 states together often focusing on the historical sites and events of each state.
Raymond was a family man that enjoyed vacations with all of his family together at the beach. He loved driving a boat and enjoyed many days of fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Closer to home, he loved his time sitting on the Alapaha River.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wendy Wells Moore; brother, Bobby Moore; and sister, Christine Tomlinson.
He is survived by sons Terry Moore (Tracye) of Lakeland and Kevin Moore (Felicia) of Naylor; grandchildren Andrew Moore (Amber) of Naylor, John Raymond Moore (Chancey) of Nashville, Georgia, Katherine Moore (Tony) of Pooler, Georgia, Jackson Moore of Lakeland, and Alex Moore of Lakeland; Great-grandchildren Becka Moore, Andon Moore, and Hannah Albritton of Naylor; brothers Virgil Moore of Naylor, and Edward Moore of Chula, Georgia; Sisters-in-Law Susie Shaughnessy (Richard) of Rutherfordton, North Carolina, Laurie Cannon (Gary) of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, and Letha Moore of Valdosta; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 1, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Lakeland Methodist Church with burial to follow in Good Hope Cemetery in Naylor. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 29th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
