Retired CMSGT James E. Herring- 101 of Valdosta, Georgia passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at his residence. He was born to the late James Tomas and Sarrah Rebecca Boone Herring on April 30, 1924, in Hahira, Georgia. James grew up in the Cat Creek and Barretts communities. In 1939, he joined New Bethel Baptist Church and was baptized in Cat Creek, a stream located behind the Pearl Todd Christian Assembly.
In 1980, he transferred his membership to Immanuel Church, which was later renamed Westside Baptist Church in 1985.
Mr. Herring was a career military man, during World War II, he served 3 years plus in the United States Navy. He was in the 3rd wave of forces on to Russell Island, South Pacific, Invasion of Okinawa, Liberation of the Philippines, a prisoner of war camp, Wakayama Jampan and Yangtzee River patrol. Honorable discharged as a Petty Officer First Class on October 30, 1945.
January 8, 1947, he joined the U.S Army Air Corps, later the U.S. Air Force. He served his country prior for over 30 years, retiring as a CMSGT.
On July 12, 1946, James married Mary Alvis Corbett. They shared 51 years of marriage until her passing on May 15, 1998. Together, they had two children: Brenda Rebecca and Jamie Dane.
On June 26, 1999, James married Mary Elizabeth Horne Mote who passed on November 29, 2017.
He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Rebecca Baird (Steve) of Tallahassee, Florida; son, Jamie Dane Herring of Valdosta, Georgia; granddaughters: Kimberly Rebecca Spivey of Tallahassee, Florida and Sarra Herring of Orange Park, Florida; great grandson, Vegas Spivey and Honor Spivey; 7 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 21, 2025, in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services with burial following at Riverview Memorial Gardens where full military honors will be rendered.
