Rex Leonard Smith, of Barney, passed away Monday, Feb. 8, 2016 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on Jan. 7, 1935 in Bainbridge, Ga. to the late L.C. Smith and Estelle Ward Smith. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army for 22-1/2 years, and after he retired he worked as a Corrections Officer at Miami Dade Corrections for another 12 years, then moved to Barney, Ga. where he became employed as a warehouseman at Poly Pro Inc. in Valdosta, Ga. for several years.He never met a stranger and always enjoyed traveling, visiting with family and friends, site seeing, hanging out in the shop with his son and his friends.He loved his children, grandchildren and cats, enjoyed watching western television shows and going to eat catfish on Thursday night and also enjoyed reading his bible. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his father-in-law Melton Darley; mother-in-law Myrtle Darley; Sister Nell Pollock, and two Brothers Roy Smith, Gerald Smith and sister-in-law Ruth Smith. Survivors include: Wife of 60 years, Ann Smith of Barney; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Robert Sutton; Knoxville, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Deirdre and Jeff Bradley; Marmet, W. Va.; son, Dennis Smith; Barney; granddaughter, Elizabeth Sutton and Stephen Latham; Sparks, Nev.; granddaughter, Jennifer and Chad Huffman; Hurricane, W.Va.; grandson, Wesley and Amanda Sutton; Cameron, N.C.; grandson, Justin Bradley, Marmet, W.Va.; great-granddaughter, Chloe Latham; great-grandsons, Noah and Eli Sutton; great-grandsons, Ian, Hunter and Jaxson Huffman; brother-in-law Lamar Pollock; sister-in-law Ruby Smith; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Travis & Ann Darley; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Sidney & Ila Young, and his loving cats: Catnip, Andy, Lil Bit, Cleo, Andy Jr., Einstein, Sylvester, Felix.
