Richard Harding Dick Davis – 88

Of Valdosta passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at Fellowship Home after a lengthy illness with his loving family at his side. He was born June 10, 1924 to the late Henry and Corday Davis. He thoroughly enjoyed high school football and played tight end for the Valdosta Wildcats. He was the very first Wildcat to be named "All Southern", which led to a full scholarship at University of Georgia. He made the decision to forego his football scholarship to join the Merchant Marines and served during WWII for three and a half years. He was a long time member of the Elks Club and of the Azalea Masonic Lodge #713, VFW and charter member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church. Dick was the owner of Davis Well Drilling Co and later the Roller Drome Skating Rink. He loved children and wanted to give them some place to gather. This brought lots of happiness and fun to young and old alike. He loved his large family and was known as "Papa Dick" to all. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Jack Davis and Joe Davis and a daughter-in-law, Gail Jones Davis.

Survivors Include: Wife of 66 years, Ann McGowan Davis, Valdosta, GA; 3 Sons and Daughters-in-law, Alan and Laurie Davis, Lake Park, GA, Henry and Susan Davis, Macon, GA, Danny and Jill Davis, Hahira, GA; Daughter and Son-in-law, Beth and Wayne Owens, Lake Park, GA; Eight Grandchildren: Gannon and Angie Davis, Daphne Davis, Holly and Phillip Greene, Haley and G.O. Heath, Erin and Kevin Wacter, Emily and Eric Tillman, Lacey and Shad Stephens and Lindsey and Justin Purvis. This includes 10 Great Grandchildren; Sister, Dorothy Simmons, Orange Park, FL.

The family will receive friends Friday evening August 31, 2012 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Music Funeral Services, Valdosta. Per Mr. Davis's request no formal services will be held. A private family graveside service will be held in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
