Richard Floyd Rigby, 87, of Lake Park, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on July 23, 1938, in Miami, Florida, to the late Ralph Augustus Rigby and Maxine Snabely Rigby.
Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he dedicated 21 years of service and retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. During his distinguished military career, he worked as a Nuclear Weapons Technician, a role that reflected his precision, intelligence, and steadfast commitment to national security. Following his military retirement, Richard continued to serve his nation through his work with the U.S. State Department in the Cryptology Department.
He loved traveling and especially cherished going on cruises with his family, creating lasting memories at sea and in new places. Richard also enjoyed the thrill of treasure hunting through thrift shops and could often be found watching online auctions, bidding on unique and interesting finds.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jane Rigby.
He is survived by his children: Richard Rigby of Lake Park, GA, Joel Rigby (Krisztina) of Washington, DC, Sherie Amaya (David) of San Antonio, TX; adopted daughter, Michelle Thomason; grandchildren: David Hart of San Antonio, TX, Christopher Rigby of Berlin, Germany, Noah Atkins and Israel Atkins both of California, Daniel Rigby of Frankfurt, Germany, Kali Bridwell (Dakota) of Missouri and Trenton Carter of Valdosta, Georgia; brothers: Ralph Rigby (Margaret) of Valdosta, Georgia and Robert Rigby (Helga) of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, November 10, 2025 at Christ Episcopal Church with burial to follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Valdosta. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11:00 PM until 12:00 PM on Monday, November 10, 2025 at the church.
