Robert E. Bobby Jones, Sr,
Lakeland Former Lakeland Postmaster Robert E. Bobby Jones, Sr., 81, passed away early Tuesday morning April 6, 2004, in the Lakeland Villa Convalescent Center following several weeks of declining health. Mr. Jones, the son of the late Henry Hampton and Elizabeth Howell Jones, was born August 30, 1922, and was a lifelong resident of Lanier County except during the time he spent in Military service.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Carter Jones, to whom he was married for almost 56 years; two daughters and their spouses, Joy and Jim Gainer of Savannah, and Julie and Kip McLeod of Lake Park; two sons, Henry Will II and Leslie Jones of Leesburg, and Robert E. Bob, Jr. and Traci Jones of Leesburg; and 12 Grandchildren, Jennifer, Beth, and Sam Gainer; Kristen, Greyson, and Rett McLeod; Will and Jessica Jones; Betsey, Trey, Carter, and Britt Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
In Addition to his parents, Mr. Jones was proceeded in death by a brother, Henry Will Jones, who died in service during World War II; a sister, Margaret Jones Josey; and a niece, Kay Shaw Norton.
Mr. Jones was known as an avid fisherman who was totally devoted to his family and friends
Bobby Jones was probably happiest when he was doing one of two things- wetting a hook in the Alapaha River or enjoying time spent with his wife and children, grandchildren, and close friends commented a Lakeland resident upon hearing of Jones death. He especially liked time spend in conversation over a meal and on the front porch of the old Motel.
A graduate of Lanier County High School, he attended South Georgia College and Young Harris College. A veteran of military service during World War II, he served the U.S. Army Air Corps. During a portion of his military service, he attended Center College, Pennsylvania.
In his professional life, he worked as sales manager of Lanier Motor Company for a number of years before his affiliation with the U.S. Postal Service in Lakeland. He was named postmaster of the Lakeland office in 1972 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1985.
For 23 years, Mr. Jones was chief for the Lakeland Volunteer Fire Dept. In a 1964 interview featured in The Lanier County News, he commented, My experience with the fire dept. began just about the time the high school building burned back in May, 1950, just after school closed down for the summer.
He was a member of Lakelands First Baptist Church and the Lanier County Lions Club in which he served as an officer. He was the chairman of Lakelands Flatlanders Fall Frolic during its early years. He was also a member of the Postmasters Association.
He worked with children and youth for a number of years as scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America and as a coach for Little League Baseball.
With his wife, he was the recipient of the 1994 Celebration of Community Award for Restoration given by the Lanier County Lions Club in collaboration with Farmers & Merchants Bank. The award recognized the couples efforts in the Main Street structure formerly known as Lakelands Jones Hotel.
Funeral services were held for Mr. Jones on Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church of Lakeland. Rev. Harold Sangster and Rev. John Evans Patten officiated at the service. Burial will follow at Lakelands Greenlawn Cemetery.
