ROGER LYNN UNDERWOOD – 59
Of Valdosta passed away Thursday, February 12, 2009 at his residence.
He was born June 17, 1949, in Blue Ridge, GA; Roger spent his early childhood in Blue Ridge and Carrollton GA. His family settled in Valdosta in 1956 where he spent the majority of the balance of his life.
In his teenage and early adult years, Roger raced dirt bikes and was a competitive water skier. He spent a great deal of his time at his parents' summer home on Lake Burton in the north Georgia mountains. Roger was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church and in recent years, enjoyed his membership in the "Outlaw" Sunday School Class. Roger was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed suspense and mystery novels. He was dearly loved as "Poppy" by his two young granddaughters.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Bill Underwood and Sara Ann West. He is survived by his daughters Dare Underwood Hartsell Chris and Edan Underwood, both of Birmingham; two granddaughters, Hayden Lily and Merritt Ray Hartsell of Birmingham, sisters, Brenda Sirmons Gary of Atlanta and Beverly Underwood Billy Bradshaw of Rome; two nieces and two nephews and countless extended family members throughout north Georgia.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m on Sunday, February 15, 2009 in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services, 3831 North Valdosta Road, Valdosta, GA 31602.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Roger's memory to the First Baptist Church of Valdosta, 200 West Central Avenue, Valdosta, GA 31601.
