Ruby Carolyn Lightsey Conner – 63
Of Wasilla, AK passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. She was born on October 26, 1953 in Valdosta, GA to Homer & Annie Laura Register Lightsey. Ruby honored her country by serving in the United States Air Force as a Jet Engine Mechanic.
At 42 years old, Ruby was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer. Refusing to give in to this dreaded disease and letting it dictate her life, Ruby chose to fight back and win the battle. Her Faith, Family and Friends provided the support and motivation for her to continue raising her family and seeing them graduate and achieve successes of their own. She traveled extensively throughout the United States, including Alaska, Canada and Pacific Regions. Learning to Scuba Dive at 50 years old and attaining an Advanced Open Water Diver's Certification, she was able to scuba dive locations throughout the Pacific Ocean that others dream of, all while managing her disease. Whether at home in Alaska or temporary homes in the Marshall Islands, Wake Island or Hawaii, gardening was always a passion, as well as enjoying all of God's Creations.
Even in passing, she fought cancer to the end and rather than give up, she continued the gallant battle. Now, as she begins life anew and lives in the House of the Lord forever, she continues to be an inspiration to all that have known her. Through determination not to let cancer rule her Life, she was able to set an example for all to see that you can live life to the fullest through Trust in the Lord and belief in yourself. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Lee Lightsey and by a sister, Debbie June Lightsey.
Survivors include her Husband, Larry James Conner of Wasilla, AK; Son & Daughter-in-Law, James Brandon & Meredith Conner of Fort Thomas, KY; Son, Jason Brantley Conner of Tampa, FL; Daughter, Nikki Alvarez of Raleigh Durham, NC; Sister, Betty Ann Norville of Valdosta, GA;
