Rufus Lafayette Bateman
Peacefully passed away in his home on Wednesday January 29, 2020 at the age of 86. He was born on November 20, 1933 in Jacksonville, FL to the late Robert and Jewel (Williamson) Bateman. Rufus was a veteran of The United States Army Core. He was also the owner of Rumar Framing, specializing in picture framing. Rufus loved to make his booze and didn’t discriminate which kind; he made beer, wine, and moonshine “Wizz”! He also adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Their favorite thing to do together was to make and play with “slime”! Along with his parents, Rufus follows his beloved wife, Mary Alice (Nance) Bateman in death.
Rufus is survived by Eldest Son and Daughter-in-Law, James Robert and Robin Bateman of Atlanta, GA; Daughter and caretaker, Debbie Freeman of Lake Park, GA; Youngest son, Mark Bateman of Dublin, GA; Grandchildren: Jay Futch, Josh (Lindsay) Freeman, Matt (Cindy) Freeman, Zac (Nicole) Freeman, Chandler Bateman, Ashley Brooks; Great Grandchildren: Haddie, Presley, Emmie, Haleigh, Tanner, Brynn; Brother and Sister-in-Law, David and Pam Nance of Atlanta, GA and a number of nieces, nephews and other family members.
Per his wishes, Rufus is to be cremated. A memorial service honoring his life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 8, 2020 in the Henry Memorial Presbyterian Church in Dublin, GA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Sympathy may be expressed online at
