Virgil Lee Moore, 95, of Naylor, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on April 8, 1931, in Lakeland, Georgia to the late Jackson Robert Moore and Codie Moore (Ganas).
Virgil spent his entire life working the land he loved. Beginning as a young man farming with a mule and plow, he dedicated himself to agriculture and never lost his passion for farming. Every day, he could be found checking on his cattle and riding the miles of electric fence that stretched across his property. He took great pride in his farm and yard, where even a pinecone rarely had the chance to remain unnoticed. Farming was more than an occupation to Virgil—it was his way of life.
His commitment to agriculture and his community earned him numerous honors and recognition throughout the years. In addition to his farming career, Virgil faithfully served the citizens of Lanier County as a County Commissioner for 34 years, helping guide and shape the community he loved. During tobacco season, he worked for Gurley's and Pierce Tobacco Warehouses as a floor sales manager for many years, where he was respected for his strong work ethic, leadership, and dedication.
Virgil was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, and always said, “I live at the foot of the cross”.
Virgil was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Jane DuBose Moore; his daughter, Rhonda Jane Moore; his parents, Jackson Robert Moore and Codie Moore; his parents-in-law, Willie DeLaughter DuBose and Janie Young DuBose; his son-in-law, Tommy Simpson; and his daughter-in-law, Becky Thompson Moore.
He is survived by his children, Sharon (Elvin) Andrews, Bob (Cathy) Moore, Deborah Moore Simpson, and John David Moore.
He was a proud grandfather to Travis (Kristie) Andrews, Blake Andrews, Thompson Moore, Judson (Amanda) Moore, Whitney Moore, and Will (Cindy) Simpson and his beloved great-grandchildren, Owen Andrews, Avie Andrews, Sadie Andrews, and Codie Moore.
Virgil also leaves behind his special friend, Sallie Exum.
