Virginia Louise Branan

November 25, 1937 — June 16, 2006

Virginia Louise Branan passed away at her home in Valdosta on June 16, 2006 following a long illness.
She was born November 25, 1937 to the late George and Margaret McKissick in Coral Gables, Fl. She followed her lifelong passion for teaching, receiving degrees in education from the University of Florida and Valdosta State College. She married John Branan in 1957. They moved to Valdosta in 1966 where she taught school at Sallas-Mahone from 1966 through 1968 and Pinegrove Elementary from 1972 through 2000. She was named Lowndes County Teacher of the Year in 1979.

Virginia was very active in the community. She served in leadership roles for several organizations, including past-President of the Valdosta Unitarian Universalist Church and the American Association of University Women. She was also an active member of the Valdosta Business and Professional Women, the Lowndes Democratic Party and the Lowndes Association of Educators. For many years she was involved with the Religious Education program at the church.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Penny Branan in 1992. She is survived by her husband, Dr. John M. Branan, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at VSU. Other survivors include her son John, Jr., daughter-in-law Jil, grandsons Kenyon and Steve all of Sharon, Ma; sister Jean McKissick and Kerry Williams of West Palm Beach, Fl; brother George McKissick of Tampa, Fl; brother-in-law Roger Branan and his wife Barbara of Jacksonville, Fl; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service celebrating her life will be led by Rev. Jack Ford on Tuesday evening, June 20 at 6:00 PM at the Valdosta Unitarian Universalist Church, 1951 East Park Ave.
