March 6, 1951 — September 13, 2024

William J. "Billy" McCowan passed away peacefully in his hometown of Valdosta, Georgia, on September 13, 2024. He was born to Thurman and Elizabeth Peace McCowan on March 6, 1951, and, after his mother's remarriage, was lovingly raised by his mother and his dad, Melvin Green, who he dearly loved. He was doted on by his grandparents, Elmer Clarence and Rita Cooper Peace, who provided him with profound guidance and love.
Billy graduated with honors from Lowndes High School, where he was a member of the Georgia Bridgemen. He furthered his education at Georgia Military College and Wiregrass Technical College. Throughout his academic career, Billy received numerous accolades and awards, a testament to his dedication.
Billy began a distinguished career in the automotive industry. He started as a mechanic at Eager Brothers GMC Toyota and rose to management positions at various automotive companies in Valdosta, including Mimbs Heavy Equipment, Isuzu and Honda dealerships, Dodge of Valdosta, and Pipkin Motors.
In 1971, Billy married the love of his life, Betty Atkins, and they shared over 53 wonderful years together. Their home was filled with love and laughter, and together they had three daughters, Julie Ann, Cindy, and Jennifer. Billy loved being a father, but his joy was multiplied when he became a grandfather to his cherished granddaughter, Emily. She brought him immeasurable joy, and
he greatly treasured the time they spent together.
Billy was a member of Gonwood Church of Christ. He found strength and solace in his spiritual beliefs, which sustained him through lifes trials. He also had great compassion for animals, even becoming a custodian for the care of homeless cats in his later years.
Billy was an avid fan of Braves baseball, local, college, and professional football, and NASCAR, attending many events with his brothers, always leaving with a good story. He could fix just about anything and was always working on a project. Most of all, Billy cherished spending time with his loved ones.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, beloved daughter Julie Ann, sister Becky Green Delk, and brother Bobby Green.
Billy leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Betty; daughters, Cindy and Jennifer; beloved granddaughter, Emily; steadfast brother and sister-in-law, Walt and Beth Green; sister-in-law, Melissa Green; nieces, Brandi, Amie, and Sarah; nephews, Ryan, Christopher, and Guy; and loyal companions, Stella, Ellie, and Margo, as well as the many cats for whom he was a caregiver.
Billy's life was a testament to hard work, love, and dedication. He will be remembered for his infectious laughter, boundless creativity, and unwavering love for his family.
