William Andrew Carter, Sr.
William Andrew Carter, Sr. – 91 of San Antonio, TX formerly of Valdosta, GA slipped peacefully from this life on Friday, August 29 2014 at New Hope Assisted Living. He was born on December 20, 1922 in Rochester, NY to the late John and Marie Fitzgerald Carter. He was raised in St. Joseph's orphanage, Erie, PA, along with his two brothers.
He joined the Army in 1941 and was appointed to the Army Air Corp upon its formation. He participated in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily and Italy as a radio operator on a C-47 Troop Carrier. He served temporary duty as a radio operator and gunner on a B-52 in Sardinia. He was a decorated veteran receiving 9 ribbons and 7 medals including the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, The European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 6 Battle Stars and the Presidential Unit Citation. He flew 62 missions over enemy territory returning downed airmen to safety.
In 1945 he married Marian Louise Spanzy of Erie, PA. He retired from the US Air Force in 1963 after attaining the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He was also retired from the Federal Aviation Agency.
Chief Carter was preceded in death by his brother, Robert S. Carter, his precious oldest son, Michael Edward Carter and his beloved wife, Marian Louise Carter.
Survivors include his two sons, William A. Carter, Jr, wife Jan Roswell, GA, John R. Carter, Ellijay, GA; daughter; Bonita C. Barron, husband Harry San Antonio, TX; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and brother, Monsignor John T. Carter, Erie, PA.
Graveside Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday morning, September 13, 2014 at Sunset Hill Cemetery where full military honors will be held rendered. Sympathy may be expressed online at
