William Harmon Royal, Sr. - 88
After several years of declining health, and a recent diagnosis of lung cancer, William Harmon Royal, Sr. 88, passed away at his home in Lakeland, GA on September 16, 2015. The youngest of 13 children, Mr. Royal was born on April 30, 1927 and was a member of Unity United Methodist Church.
As a young husband and father, Mr. Royal helped his father-in-law, Sam Pierce, worked the Pierce Farm, but in the middle 1950's, Mr. Royal began his career with Georgia Power in Valdosta, Georgia. He remained with Georgia Power until his retirement after 40 years of service. During his years at Georgia Power, he became known as "Gator". If you didn't know Gator personally, you knew of his legend.
Mr. Royal is survived by his son, Bo Royal of Lakeland, GA, his daughter, Claire R. Dollar of Valdosta, GA, and a granddaughter, Bethany Dollar of Valdosta, GA. Mr. Royal is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen, whom he adored. They were married for sixty-four years. When Mrs. Royal's health began to decline, Mr. Royal lovingly cared for her until her death on August 6, 2011. Also preceding Mr. Royal in death is his son-in-law, Larry Dollar.
Mr. Royal was a hard worker, loyal friend, loving father and grandfather, and devoted husband. His storytelling, fish fry cookouts, sense of humor and quiet strength will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him.
As per his request, Mr. Royal was cremated. A memorial service will be held at Unity United Methodist Church in Lakeland on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 2:00P.M. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers please make contributions to Langdale Hospice House 2263 Pineview Dr, Valdosta, GA 31602 or the Lowndes County Cancer Society.
