Willie “Poppa Joe” Black, 84 of Valdosta, Georgia passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at his residence. Poppa Joe was born on December 18, 1939, to the late Gaston and Mary Ellen (Lawson) Black in Colgate, Oklahoma. He enjoyed motorcycles, reading, jeopardy, and loved his coffee. It is clear he lived a full life surrounded by love from his family and community. He was a Georgia Ride Captain for the PGR (Patriot Guard Riders) for numerous years. Poppa Joe served his country honorably for over 24 years in the United States Air Force where he received various commendation metals including the Purple Heart, a testament to his bravery and sacrifice. His dedication to service speaks volumes about his character and commitment to others. In honoring Poppa Joe’s remarkable life, let us remember his unwavering dedication to service and the enduring love he shared with his family and community. Along with his parents, Poppa Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Linda Black; Son, Donnie Black; 4 siblings: Rosie, James, Dwight, and Ruby John.
Papa Joe is survived by his wife of 19 years, Alice Faye Black of Valdosta, Georgia; Daughter, Eulalie Leilani Black of Summerville, South Carolina; Grandchildren: Marianne Black of Daytona Beach, Florida and Thomas Connell of Nashville, Georgia; Great grandchildren: Devin, Lola, and Korbin; One sister and Four Brothers; Kids: Rob, Brandon & Ryan, Cheech
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 8, 2024 in the Riverview Memorial Garden, 3945 N. Valdosta Rd., Valdosta, GA 31602. A final memorial ride will begin at his residence and will end at the cemetery. All PGR bike riders, or any other organizational bike riders are encouraged to meet at Poppa Joes residence at 9:00 AM. All cars, trucks and SUVs are encouraged to meet at cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the PGR or American Legion Post 13. Messages of sympathy can be left for the family by visiting www.musicfuneralservices.com . The Black family is being served by the caring and professional staff of Music Funeral Services of Valdosta.
